This handsome chimpanzee looks directly into the camera, his intelligence palpable. He seems to recognize how much the photographer is like himself. This photograph was taken at the Barcelona Zoo by Spanish photographer Jordi Piqué who so masterfully captures with his camera just how incredibly alike are chimpanzees and human beings.

"I spent many days with the chimpanzees in the zoo. The genetic difference between a chimpanzee and a human is so small that we should consider ourselves the same since we are joined by many more things than those that separate us. They are emotionally like us. They have fun, they get bored, they love, they hate, they react like we do. They are much more clever and intelligent than what most people think. Like humans, each chimpanzee has their own character.
At first they treated me with total indifference. They had no intention of helping me in my work. When the camera was mounted and the appropriate lens on the tripod they turned their backs to me. They know perfectly well what a camera is and they know perfectly well that if they turn their back to me they are annoying me. So, at first, it was very expensive taking photos when they had no interest in participating. However, after insisting for days and days, little by little I gained the chimpanzees' curiosity and sympathy. They knew that I respected them and that I was only going to take pictures of them, and at times they even deigned to flirt with me and offer me their best angles.
It annoys me enormously that there are people who will chastise them, shout at them or make disparaging remarks about these intelligent animals. Chimpanzees often behave better than humans.
Whenever I visit the zoo, I visit the chimpanzees and hang out with them, even when I’m not taking photos of them."
